It’s been an off year for irascible genius House (Hugh Laurie) and the brash medical drama, but both return to lively form in this installment (which is extended by eight minutes). The latest quirky-yet-deathly-ill patient? A desperate, gun-toting man named Jason (Zeljko Ivanek, late of Damages) who decides to hold House, Thirteen (Olivia Wilde), other hospital staffers and patients hostage until the doc can diagnose his unexplained symptoms. As House’s underlings rush to help solve the riddle, SWAT team hovers and House’s boss (and maybe-love), Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein), acts as a go-between. Insanely preposterous? It wouldn’t be House if it weren’t (and warning: Thirteen’s blah terminal-illness plotline may cause migraines). That said, this is a clever tale, and Laurie and Ivanek raise the bar with their darkly humorous cat-and-mouse tension. Even more promising: The crisis allows for chemistry-starved House and Cuddy to start clicking as a couple. Finally!
